apanese Communist Party representative Kasai Akira on May 19 at a Lower House committee meeting on foreign affairs demanded that the government of the only A-bombed country should agree on the making of a roadmap for the complete elimination of nuclear weapons.
The Main Committee I of the NPT Review Conference in its draft report proposed to initiate international negotiations to consider a roadmap to abolish nuclear weapons, which is a landmark result, Kasai stated.
Foreign Minister Okada Katsuya, however, said, “Without the consent of all nuclear-capable states, it will be difficult to reach a final agreement. Japan cannot easily say that we agree without that.”
Kasai in response stated, “Japan should express to the world, ‘Japan is happy to approve the creation of a roadmap,’ and make efforts to persuade nuclear-weapon states to cooperate.”
