JCP demands decommissioning of Tokai reactor

Members of the Japanese Communist Party Ibaraki Prefectural Committee on May 12 visited the Japan Atomic Power Company (JAPC) and called for the decommissioning of an aging reactor at the Tokai No.2 Nuclear Power Plant in Tokai Village in Ibaraki Prefecture.
The operation of the Tokai No.2 Nuclear Power Plant has been shut down since the March 11 massive earthquake. Due to the tsunami following the earthquake, one out of three diesel-powered generators for emergency use was halted at the Plant.
The JAPC told the JCP representatives that in light of the Fukushima No1. Nuclear Power Plant accident, it is considering the construction of a breakwater against a 15-meter tsunami.
JAPC officials declined to say when the Tokai No.2 Nuclear Power Plant will restart. Regarding procedures for introducing the plutonium-thermal program, they indicated their intention to postpone it, saying “We put higher priority on countermeasures against earthquakes and tsunami.”
The representation was concluded by an assembly member of Ibaraki Prefecture, related city and village assembly members, and civic group members.
