JCP calls for drastic revision of Tokyo’s disaster-prevention measures

May 26, 2011
Japanese Communist Party members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly on May 25 urged the local government to drastically revise its disaster-prevention measures.

Some places in Tokyo have suffered from liquefaction damages caused by the March 11 earthquake. Many Tokyoites had difficulties commuting home from workplaces on the day due to the suspension of train operations.

The JCP lawmakers also called on the metropolitan government to strengthen its support to disaster victims who are being evacuated to Tokyo as well as to reformulate its energy policy.

A government official responded to their request by saying that the government now considers revising the disaster-prevention measures and that it will do its utmost to provide support to evacuees.

On the same day, the JCP representatives of Tokyo also called on the metropolitan government to strengthen its monitoring of radiation levels.

Prior to the representation, they measured radiation levels at 128 locations in Tokyo from May 5 to 25 with the support of experts.

The JCP members demanded that the Tokyo government measure radiation levels 1 meter above the ground instead of the current 18 meters as well as increase locations for the monitoring.
