Ginowan, Kadena residents want a quiet environment |
Okinawa’s Ginowan City residents on June 13 conducted a day-long sit-in protest against the deployment of MV-22 Osprey aircraft to the U.S. Futenma base.
Mayor Asato Takeshi, ex-Mayor Iha Yoichi, JCP Lower House Dietmember Akamine Seiken, JCP Okinawa Prefectural Assembly member Maeda Masaaki, and many other local assemblypersons gathered in front of the city government office to join in the action.
The mayor said, “We’ve put up with the Futenma base for 66 years and can’t take it anymore,” and called on the participants to work together until the base is shut down.
Kadena Town
Kadena Town authorities on June 12 held a rally in opposition to U.S. senators’ call for the U.S. Futenma base to be integrated into the U.S. Kadena base.
Town Mayor Toyama Hiroshi, high school students, and townspeople of all generations expressed their determination to block the integration proposal.
Town Assembly Chair Tasaki Hiromi said, “We have to live in an area of only 2.64 square kilometers because 83% of the town’s area has been seized and is occupied by the U.S. forces.”
JCP member of the Kadena Town Assembly Tanaka Koei showed his strong bond with the townspeople by saying, “The integration idea has come up four times before, but each time we fought back against it.”
JCP Dietmember Akamine Seiken, JCP Okinawa Assembly Maeda Masaaki, and JCP candidate for the Okinawa Assembly Maesato Tamotsu also took part in the rally.
