JCP and primary industry organizations agree to shift to renewable energy production

The Japanese Communist Party on June 21 in meetings with organizations in the agricultural, forestry, and fisheries industries reached a consensus on supporting a shift to renewable energy from nuclear power generation.

In order to explain the JCP’s recent proposal on energy policy and to exchange views, JCP member of the House of Councilors Kami Tomoko visited the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperative Associations (JF Zengyoren), the Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA-Zenchu), and the National Federation of Forest Owners’ Cooperative Associations (Zenmoriren).

In the meeting with JF Zengyoren, senior managing director Yoshida Hiromi reported that Hokkaido’s cooperative association heads resolved to commence study toward the use of safe and eco-friendly energy sources such as sunlight and wind. He said that the consensus is to seek the use of various forms of renewable energy.

JA-Zenchu senior director Fuji Shigeo said to Kami, “Like food, electricity is vital for daily life so it must be safe. In the future, people will use power generated mainly by environment-friendly energy sources.”

Zenmoriren senior director Umeno Hiroyuki said, “Due to the nuclear accident, the national energy strategy will be revised drastically and wood, which has great potential as an energy source, will attract people’s attention.”

These organizations asked JCP for cooperation in their revitalization efforts in the disaster-hit areas.
