No to NPP operations: Citizens in rallies

In Shika Town hosting the Shika nuclear power plant of Hokuriku Electric Power Co., located in the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa Prefecture, an anti-NPP rally took place on August 21, calling for the decommissioning of the Shika NPP.

About 450 participants, including residents of neighboring Toyama Prefecture, paraded through the town, calling for a withdrawal from nuclear power generation.

During the rally, Japanese Communist Party House of Councilors member Inoue Satoshi said, “Now is the time to withdraw from nuclear power generation. The best way for environmentally-rich Noto is to convert to renewable energy sources that will assist in the sustainable development of the local economy.”

On the same day in Sapporo City in Hokkaido Prefecture, where Hokkaido Electric Power Co. dared to resume operations of its Tomari NPP, 300 citizens paraded in the city, calling for a halt to the Tomari NPP’s No.3 reactor.

Izumi Kaori, representing the association “Shut Tomari,” organizer of the protest action, said, “Governor Takahashi Harumi approved the resumption of commercial operations at an NPP, the first since the Fukushima accident. Let us work together to shut down the dangerous NPP.”
