2011 September 14 - 20 [NUCLEAR CRISIS]

JCP Fukuoka negotiates decommissioning of nuclear reactors with Kyushu power company

September 15, 2011
Representatives of the Fukuoka Prefectural Committee of the Japanese Communist Party on September 13 visited the headquarters of Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. in Fukuoka City to negotiate for the immediate decommissioning of two reactors at the utility’s Genkai Nuclear Power Plant.

The Unit 1 reactor at the Genkai NPP started its operations in 1975 and is too old to be used. The plant’s Unit 3 reactor operates on “pluthermal” power generation which uses plutonium-uranium mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel and is extremely dangerous.

The plant operator, however, sees no need to scrap these reactors at the present moment, refusing to move forward to decommissioning them.

The JCP Fukuoka Committee representatives also demanded that the power company get actively involved in renewable energy development called for by local authorities and stop providing political donations to and assisting election campaigns of specific pro-nuclear power politicians.
