All JCP candidates win in Nagano City
|
All six Japanese Communist Party candidates won in the Nagano City Assembly election on September 18 although the total number of assembly seats was reduced by two to 39.
The JCP retained the same number of seats as before and became the assembly’s dominant political party. It also filled the requirement to submit bills to the assembly and participate in question and answer sessions at the assembly’s plenary sessions.
A key issue in the election was the city government plan to use 13 billion yen in tax money for renovation of the city hall and civic center.
During the election campaign, other party candidates avoided expressing their views on the issue. The JCP candidates appealed to voters that the city hall only needs minor structural work done to enhance its earthquake resistance and that the plan to renovate the city hall should not be undertaken until Nagano citizens have the chance to discuss and reach a consensus on the plan.
