Sumitomo Trust promises to stop contract workers sales quota

Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Councilors Daimon Mikishi at a House of Councilors committee meeting on March 16 pointed out that Sumitomo violates the Financial Services Agency directives because Sumitomo’s labor contract states that if a contract worker fails to achieve his/her sales quota, the current contract will be terminated.
Financial Services Minister Kamei Shizuka replied, “I will make an effort (to get them to correct the situation).”

The Financial Services Agency directives require major banks to refrain from forcing their sales workers to meet their goals of sales or face dismissal.

A Sumitomo contract worker complained, “Because I have to meet my goal, even if customers feel anxious about our financial services products, I have to persuade them to purchase a product. It is outrageous that while Sumitomo forces us to do this, it threatens us with a labor contract that states if we fail to meet our sales quota, we will be dismissed. I felt relieved that Sumitomo was forced to delete this provision from the contract.”
