Syria’s al-Assad government should stop resorting to violence

One year has passed since Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria began its relentless repression of citizens opposing al-Assad’s dictatorship. The death toll has risen to more than 7,500, many of whom were unarmed children and women.
Syrian citizens are not only resisting the dictatorship but are seeking democratic change as well as respect for human rights to be established in Syria.
The al-Assad government should immediately stop resorting to violence and accept international humanitarian aid such as food and medicine.
As for the international community, it is necessary to increase its diplomatic and non-confrontational efforts to minimize sacrifice.
The al-Assad government is obviously becoming isolated in the world. Nonetheless, it is against the U.N. Charter to bring down a government by outside force, no matter what kind of government it may be.
The urgent need is to put an end to violence and provide humanitarian assistance to the people in Syria. The international community should move forward to work for a political solution to the issue while opposing military intervention and taking effective measures to strengthen humanitarian support.
