South Koreans requests Japan to return Korean cultural assets

April 9, 2010
Representatives of a South Korean civic organization on April 8 visited Japan’s Foreign Ministry to request that Japan return royal protocols of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Japanese Communist Party House of Representatives member Kasai Akira attended the meeting with them.

During its colonial rule of Korea (1910 – 1945), Japan plundered royal protocols called Uigwe, which are now in the possession of the Imperial Household Agency.

Joseon Dynasty Uigwe Recovery Committee Chair Kim Ui Jeong said, “A return of the protocols to Korea on the 100th anniversary of the annexation of Korea would be appreciated.”

Foreign Ministry Northeast Asian Division chief official Yamamoto Fumito said, “As this year is an important year for Japan and South Korea, we want to develop bilateral relations on a true future-oriented basis.” He promised to convey the committee’s request to Foreign Minister Okada Katsuya.

JCP Kasai urged the ministry to provide a sincere response and settlement of the issue so that the relations of friendship and mutual trust between Japan and South Korea may develop.”
