Kyoto residents act against regulations against dancing

March 17, 2012
A group of owners, workers, performers, and users of live music houses and night clubs in Kyoto on March 16 made representations to all political parties of the Kyoto Prefectural Assembly, calling for a review of the existing restrictions on “dancing” (at live music houses or clubs) under the Entertainment Business Act.

The group requests that excessive interventions or crackdowns by the police or other authorities be reviewed, and that the Entertainment Business Act be properly handled.

In Osaka, the police cracked down a club just because the customers were swaying to the music, putting the club out of business in the end.

At a press conference after the representations, Yamamoto Tatsushi of the group said, “Please, do not regulate by law ‘dances’, which are an expression of the pleasure and joy of listening to music.”

Yamamoto added, “It’s not fair to treat ‘dances’ in the same category with crimes like drugs and violence.”
