More than 50% of disabled people working at workshops for the disabled are living on less than 1 million yen in annual income. This was discovered by the Liaison Council of Disabled People’s Workshops (Kyosa-ren).
Among 10,000 respondents to Kyosa-ren’s survey, 56.1% of respondents annually earn less than 1 million yen, and 99% earn less than 2 million yen in annual income.
According to the National Tax Agency, annual income was less than 1 million yen for 7.9% and less than 2 million yen for 22.9% of the total Japanese working population in 2010.
The survey also found out that 7,504 or 86.7% of the respondents receive disability pension payments.
Livelihood protection benefits are given to 10% of the respondents. The rate is over 6 times more than the rate of the total population (1.6%).
