Kanagawa residents protest against closure of public facilities

June 22, 2012
Residents in Kanagawa Prefecture on June 21 held a sit-in protest in front of the prefectural office building opposing a move to close almost all public facilities run by the prefectural government.

The action was organized by the Kanagawa Federation of Trade Unions. Participants also made representations to prefectural assembly members.

In May, an external investigation group of the prefectural government proposed a plan to shut down all public institutions other than police forces and schools operated by the government within 3 years and to freeze and review subsidies to municipalities and organizations.

Kanagawa Governor Kuroiwa Yuji at a prefectural assembly meeting on June 19 said, “Prefectural authorities would not be able to introduce such a dynamic proposal. I appreciate this clear message that reflects our severe financial conditions.”
