All local assemblies in Okinawa resolve to oppose Osprey deployment

June 21, 2012
The Okinawa’s Izena Village Assembly on June 20 adopted a statement in protest against the planned deployment of the MV-22 Osprey aircraft to the U.S. Futenma base. As a result, all 42 local assemblies in the prefecture, including the prefectural assembly, have adopted similar resolutions and statements.

This fact has again shown Okinawa’s strong determination to urge the Japanese and U.S. governments to give up the plan to deploy the aircraft to the Futenma base.

In July 2011, the Okinawa Prefectural Assembly passed a resolution to oppose the deployment. The Naha City Assembly passed resolutions protesting the deployment four times.

Stating that the Osprey deployment “will infringe on Okinawan people’s right to live in peace,” the Izena Village Assembly in the statement requests the two governments to cancel the deployment plan.
