Shii attends Korean Residents Union in Japan’s New Year party

Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on January 9 attended a New Year reception hosted by the Korean Residents Union in Japan (Mindan) Central Headquarter in Tokyo.

Shii gave a speech on behalf of the JCP to offer a New Year’s greeting to all participants at the reception and said, “The JCP has been working to encourage Japan to share the historical facts with South Korea for the sake of a long-lasting mutual ties of friendship.”

Concerning foreigners’ right to vote in local elections, Shii promised to make an effort for the earliest possible enactment of a new law, saying, “The JCP has been calling not only for electoral suffrage for permanent foreign residents but also their right to stand in elections.”

JCP Vice-Chair Ogata Yasuo (International Bureau director), Policy Commission Chair Koike Akira (House of Councilors), and Inoue Satoshi (House of Councilors) also attended the reception and had amiable conversations with South Korean Ambassador to Japan Kwon Chul-hyun, Mindan Central Headquarter President Jeong Jin, Korea-Japan Parliamentarians’ Union President Lee Sang Deuk, and other Mindan executives.
