DPJ is ‘LDP’s Noda faction’

July 12, 2012
“The ‘Noda faction’ of the Liberal Democratic Party, such a humiliating phrase is now being used to describe the DPJ,” said former Prime Minister Hatoyama Yukio at his group meeting on July 10.

The first prime minister of the government led by the Democratic Party of Japan went on to say, “Looking at our discussions on the Osprey deployment and the right of collective self-defense, we can’t say that such a description is completely wrong. The situation is very tough.”

While saying this, Hatoyama during his tenure broke the DPJ’s election promise to relocate the U.S. Futenma base to somewhere outside Okinawa.

On the same day, former Agriculture Minister Kano Michihiko also had his group meeting, where he said to participants, “Let us try to bring calm back to the party.”

According to the Sankei Shimbun’s report, however, one of the topics discussed at the meeting was to announce next month Japan’s participation in negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, a controversial topic that could further widen the rifts in the party.
