Okinawa assembly adopts resolution protesting the day of ‘restoration of Japan’s sovereignty’

The Okinawa Prefectural Assembly on March 29 adopted a resolution in protest against Prime Minister Abe Shinzo’s plan to hold a ceremony to commemorate the San Francisco Peace Treaty which separated Okinawa from Japan.

All 15 members of the Liberal Democratic Party walked out of the assembly hall prior to its adoption.

Citing the prime minister’s remark that Japan restored its complete sovereignty on April 28, 1952, the day the San Francisco Peace Treaty came into effect, the resolution points out that as for Okinawans it is nothing but “the Day of Humiliation” because the treaty forced Japan to give up its authority over Okinawa.

Criticizing the Abe’s plan, the resolution stated that the ceremony is unacceptable as it tramples on Okinawan s’ feelings and again isolates the prefecture from mainland Japan.
