JCP Ichida welcomes government’s move toward dialogue with North Korea

Concerning a recent visit to North Korea by the Abe Cabinet’s special adviser, Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Ichida Tadayoshi said, “We welcome the indication that the Abe Cabinet is willing to move in a direction toward dialogue with North Korea.”
Special Cabinet adviser Iijima Isao reportedly visited North Korea earlier this month and told the country’s officials that to comprehensively solve the issues of abduction, nuclear weapons, and missiles is the policy aim of the Japanese government.
At a press conference in the Diet building, Ichida stated, “While it is still uncertain in which direction Iijima’s visit will take the bilateral relations, dialogue is the only viable option to solve North Korean issues.” The 2002 Japan-DPRK Pyongyang Declaration and the 2005 Six-Party Talks joint statement must be the basis for developing the dialogue, he stressed.
