On the announcement that South Korean President Roh Moo Hyun will visit Pyongyang for summit talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in late August, Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Ichida Tadayoshi made the following comment in answer to reporters’ questions:
“We sincerely welcome the decision to hold a North-South Korea summit at a time when the six-party talks on North Korea’s nuclear programs is making progress.
This summit is very significant for ensuring Northeast Asian peace and security. The JCP sincerely hopes for its success.” - Akahata, August 9, 2007
* The summit talks originally scheduled for August 28-30 were postponed until October 2-4 due to flood damages in North Korea.
