Cross-party league in Nara demands alternative energy development

A cross-party league of Nara Prefectural Assembly members working for a departure from nuclear power generation on October 17 called on Governor Arai Shogo to allocate more budgets for promoting alternative energy sources locally.

Out of 42 assembly members, 13 belong to this group who are members of the Liberal Democratic, Japanese Communist, and Social Democratic parties, as well as independents.

A statement submitted by the groups’ five representatives to the governor demands the following four points: increase the budget for subsidizing households to install solar power generation systems in their homes; promote installment of such systems in public facilities; open woody biomass power plants in or invite such plant operators to the prefecture; and set numerical targets to aggressively tackle promotion of alternative energy sources.

In response to their request, Governor Arai stated that he wants to develop his government’s efforts to find appropriate ways for Nara to promote power generation using natural energy sources.
