Labor earnings decrease for 19 consecutive months

Workers’ wages in December posted a decline for 19 consecutive months, indicated in the Labor Ministry’s survey results released on February 18.

According to the ministry’s monthly labor survey, in December 2013 the average amount of contractual cash earnings that include basic and overtime pay was 260,739 yen, and the average amount of scheduled cash earnings, or basic wages, was 240,484 yen. Both showed a decrease of 0.2% from those in the same month a year ago.

The ministry also announced that compared to the previous year, average monthly contractual earnings of workers in 2013 fell by 0.5% to 260,353 yen and average monthly basic wages dropped by 0.6% to 241,250 yen.

On the same day, the Internal Affair Ministry published data on the labor force survey in 2013.

The number of full-time employees decreased by 490,000 to 32.94 million from the previous year, while the number of non-regular employees increased by 930,000 to 19.06 million, marking the ever-largest decrease and increase respectively since the start of the survey.
