Fukushima municipalities resolve to create a prefecture without nuclear power
|
The mayors’ group of towns and villages in Fukushima on June 4 in its general meeting adopted a resolution demanding that all the reactors in Fukushima be decommissioned, following the one endorsed by the local assembly chairpersons’ group on the previous day.
The resolution of the mayors’ group stated, “Based on lessons learned from the 2011 nuclear meltdown accident, the prefecture has been trying to figure out how to secure the citizens’ safety and the future of the area and had decided to establish the local economy without nuclear power by promoting renewable energy resources.” They requested the state and Tokyo Electric Power Company to decommission all the reactors in the prefecture.
Yukawa Village Mayor Otsuka Setsuo, who heads the mayors’ group, pointed out that evacuees will not be able to return to their homes without prospects of decommissioning, and called on the national government and TEPCO to listen to the Fukushima residents.
