No-nuke group presses gov’t to advocate start of negotiations on NWC in UNGA

With the 69th UN General Assembly approaching, the Japan Association for a Non-Nuclear Government made representations to the government, demanding that Japan display initiative appropriate to an atomic-bombed nation in the global effort to abolish nuclear weapons.

Accompanied by Japanese Communist Party member of the Lower House Kasai Akira (standing board member of the association), representatives of the association visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on September 10.

They said that Japan should propose a resolution calling for the start of negotiations on a Nuclear Weapons Convention, support resolutions proposed by nonaligned nations for the abolition of nuclear weapons within a set time limit, make known to the world the tragic reality of the A-bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and make efforts to help accelerate the move for a “humanitarian approach to nuclear disarmament”.

They also demanded that Japan remove itself from “the U.S. nuclear umbrella” and declare to the international community that Japan will strictly maintain “the Three Non-Nuclear Principles”. Japan should also abrogate “secret pacts with the U.S. on nuclear weapons”, they added.

Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Uto Takashi in response said, “The security environment around Japan is severe. The government will realistically adopt an appropriate stance (regarding the NWC).”
