Japanese gov’t helps US bases in Japan increase their value to 46 billion dollars

A recent U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) report showed that regarding asset values, four of the five most valuable U.S. military bases abroad are located in Japan.

The 2014 DoD Base Structure Report, which was submitted to the Congress, calculates the value of U.S. military facilities abroad as of September 2013 based on the number of buildings and the total floor area, excluding the land value.

The total value of U.S. bases in Japan amounts to 46.2 billion dollars, far exceeding 41.8 billion dollars of those in Germany which hosts more U.S. bases in terms of the number of facilities and land area. This is because the Japanese government provides so-called sympathy budget for new facilities and renovations.

While the U.S. military decreased its bases abroad from 902 to 576 over the last 10 years, the number of U.S. bases in Japan remained the same.
