JCP Akamine grills gov’t on construction plan of quarters for US soldiers in Okinawa

Japanese Communist Party member of the House of Representatives Akamine Seiken on October 14 at a House National Security Committee meeting grilled the government on an alleged plan to build accommodations for U.S. servicepersons and their families in Okinawa.

Akamine had in hand U.S. government documents which Kyodo News published in July. Those documents include a plan to construct more than 30 buildings, including apartments for U.S. military personnel in the vicinity of the Henoko dam after gathering soil there for the U.S. base construction in the Henoko coastal area.

Akamine asked the Defense Ministry whether it had ever discussed the housing construction project with the U.S. administration. A ministry official replied that he was unaware of such papers.

The JCP parliamentarian pointed to the fact that another document released by the U.S. Marine Corps entitled “Strategic Vision 2025” states that Tokyo is aware of the quarters construction project. He demanded that the Abe government make the facts public immediately.
