Mayors for Peace calls for early conclusion of nuclear weapons convention

Japanese member cities of the Mayors for Peace on November 10 and 11 held a meeting and adopted a document calling on the Japanese government to take a lead in realizing a nuclear weapons convention.

Heads of 102 municipalities across the country took part in the two-day meeting held in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture.

The resolution document urges the Japanese government to work to build international momentum toward a world free from nuclear weapons, and play a leading role in the international efforts for the start of negotiations on a convention banning nuclear weapons.

The mayors’ group decided to send a delegation to the NPT review conference scheduled for 2015, the 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. During the conference, the delegation will petition UN officials and foreign government representatives for realization of the convention. The mayors’ group will encourage other municipal leaders to join the delegation.
