Union: nursing-care facility staff imposed long night shift work

The Japan Federation of Medical Worker's Unions (Iroren) on February 23 published survey results, revealing that nursing-care workers are facing harsh night-shift schedules.

Iroren conducted a survey on 118 elderly-care facilities around the country as of June 2014. This is the second survey of this kind by the union.

According to the survey results, at 86.8% of the facilities, workers are working a two-shift system, and at around 70% of them, workers are working more than 16 hours on night duty.

Iroren official Nukui Shinji at a press conference held in Tokyo said that staff shortages due to the low wages of care workers is forcing them to leave the industry, which places a heavier burden on the remaining workers, especially those on night duty.

In order to improve this situation, Iroren demanded that the government refrain from allowing the reduction in wages and deterioration of working conditions in the nursing care industry which have made night shift work conditions more severe.
