Sukiya workers still suffer from heavy workloads: youth union

Excessively heavy workloads imposed by major fast-food chain “Sukiya,” including having only one employee run the graveyard shift, has not been corrected, the Tokyo Metropolitan Youth Union revealed at a press conference on April 8.

Due to the shortage of workers who were suffering from the heavy workloads, Sukiya last year had to temporarily close its restaurants one after another.

At a press conference, a union member who works at a Sukiya outlet in Yokohama City, said that Sukiya recently implemented the one worker per shift policy on the day shift. As a result, workers are too busy to take breaks guaranteed by the Labor Standards Law, he testified.

An in-house committee set by the Sukiya operator, Zensho Holdings Co., Ltd., released a report on the same day concluding that the working environment of its restaurants has not been sufficiently improved.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Youth Union will engage in collective bargaining with the company management to address this issue.
