JCP works as main party carrying public demands to Diet
|
More than half of all petition signatures collected by various citizens’ organizations were submitted to the ordinary Diet session ending last month with support from the Japanese Communist Party. This reflects the party’s active involvement in a wide range of public movements at the grass-roots level.
During the 189th ordinary Diet session (between January 26 and September 27), a total of 29.6 million signatures was sent to the Diet, up by 2 million from the previous ordinary session. Of them, the number of signatures endorsed by the JCP stood at 15.0 million. The JCP’s share in all signatures presented to the Diet reaches 50.7%, far larger than the Democratic Party of Japan (21.2%) and the Liberal Democratic Party (17.7%).
The signatures brought into the Diet via the JCP include various demands, including repeal of the war legislation, protection of Article 9 of the Constitution, abolition of nuclear power generation and promotion of renewable energy sources, establishment of an across-the-board minimum wage, withdrawal of the government plan to construct a new U.S. base in Okinawa’s Henoko district, cancellation of the scheduled consumption tax increase, termination of the “My Number” ID system, abolition of the secrets protection law, and opposition to an adverse revision of the wiretapping law and labor laws.
Regarding the opposition to the war legislation, 6.61 million signatures were filed with the Diet. The JCP backed 51.9% of the signatures, the DPJ 40.0% and the Social Democratic Party 7.1%. The three parties combined, the percentage reaches 99%.
