Opposition parties should cooperate in elections to repeal war legislation: SEALDs to foreign journalist

The anti-war students’ group SEALDs on October 28 held a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan in Tokyo to state that opposition parties should cooperate in upcoming elections to restore constitutionalism and democracy in Japan.

A SEALs member, Honma Masakazu, pointed out that the forcibly-enacted security legislation tramples on the basic principles of constitutionalism and democracy. He stressed that in order to defend these two principles, opposition parties should put aside their differences in views on other political issues, and make a united effort in future elections. He also proposed that the electorate encourage opposition politicians to work to achieve this goal.

Suwahara Takeshi, another SEALDs member, said that Japan is now in “a state of emergency” and that politicians opposing the war legislation should pay attention to what the general public want them to do. He concluded that citizens need to join hands and do whatever they can to make a breakthrough in the current situation.
