Yamashita attends New Year reception of Korean Residents Union in Japan
Japanese Communist Party Secretariat Head Yamashita Yoshiki on January 13 attended a New Year reception hosted by the Korean Residents Union in Japan (Mindan) Central Headquarters in Tokyo.
Mindan President Oh Gongtae in his greetings welcomed the Japan-South Korea agreement on the “comfort women” issue at the end of 2015. He, then, pointed out that to prevent hate-speech campaigns and other discriminatory actions against Korean residents in Japan is the urgent task at hand, expressing his determination to lobby Dietmembers to introduce and implement anti-hate-speech legislation.
As guest speakers, JCP Yamashita and other political party representatives delivered speeches.
Yamashita stressed that in order for a full settlement of the “comfort women” issue, it is vital for Japan to face up to its past history, show remorse for its past mistakes, and firmly maintain its clear stance to utilize lessons from those mistakes. He also said that the JCP will work hard to increase Diet discussions on legislation regulating hate-speech campaigns.
Yamashita had warm conversations with Japanese and foreign guests, including the Mindan President, South Korean Ambassador to Japan Yoo Heung-soo, and head of the South Korea-Japan parliamentarians’ league Suh Chung-won.
JCP member of the House of Councilors Ichida Tadayoshi (JCP Vice Chair), and JCP members of the House of Representatives Kokuta Keiji and Kasai Akira also attended the reception.
