Hiroshima Day Rally resolves to promote international signature drive in support of Hibakusha’s appeal

August 7, 2016
The 2016 World Conference against A and H Bombs and related events in Hiroshima ended on August 6 with the Hiroshima Day Rally which was joined by 5,500 people, including 54 overseas delegates from 19 countries. They resolved to work hard to create an upsurge in a new international signature-collection campaign in support of the Hibakusha’s appeal for the elimination of nuclear weapons.

In the rally, UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Kim Won-Soo and a high-ranking official of the Mexican government delivered solidarity speeches.

Kim in his speech said that the total abolition of nuclear weapons is essential to make sure that those weapons will never be used, and expressed his expectations for the role of Hibakusha and antinuke activists in achieving this goal.

Delegates from Hokkaido, Fukushima, Tokyo, and Kyoto appeared on the stage and expressed their determination to work hard at the grass-roots level to collect signatures in support of the appeal of Hibakusha for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

In conclusion, the participants adopted a resolution calling on an open-ended UN working group on nuclear disarmament to submit to the coming UN General Assembly session recommendations which include the commencement of negotiations for a treaty to ban and eliminate nuclear weapons. The resolution also points to the need to drive countries sticking to the nuclear deterrence policy into isolation with the overwhelming force of worldwide public opinion.
