In the capital cities of the two disaster-stricken prefectures, Iwate and Miyagi, all Japanese Communist Party candidates won seats in local assembly elections on August 28, which had been postponed due to the massive earthquake.

Noda Yoshihiko, who has been calling for a review of the DPJ manifesto in consultation with the Liberal Democratic and Komei parties, became DPJ’s new head and the prime minister-to-be. JCP Chair Shii said that the DPJ has chosen the path toward a grand coalition and a tax hike.
