JCP’s political funds report shows close ties with general public

November 26, 2016
As the Internal Affairs Ministry published the 2015 report on political funds on November 25, Japanese Communist Party Financial and Management Commission Chair Iwai Tetsuya issued a statement outlining how the JCP manages its political funds.

In the statement, Iwai stressed that the JCP is financing itself through party dues, the selling of its organ papers and books, and donations from individuals without accepting the unconstitutional government subsidy or corporate and organizational donations.

The JCP in 2015 had a total income of about 23.32 billion yen (up 6% from 2014) and a total expenditure of about 23.60 million yen (up 5% from 2014), with about 1.43 billion yen in balance carried forward.

Iwai said that the party’s publication activities made up 79.8% of revenues and 58.5% of expenditures. This shows that the JCP has close ties with the general public through its activities centering on its daily newspaper Akahata, he added.

Noting that donations from individuals increased by 43% from the previous year, Iwai said that the increase in donations indicates that the JCP won a favorable public reputation through its hard work in struggles against the war laws and in efforts to realize collaboration between opposition parties and concerned citizens.

Iwai pointed out that the Japanese political situation has entered a new stage where the opposition/citizens alliance will clash head-on with the forces of the Liberal Democratic Party, the Komei Party, and supportive small parties. Under this situation, the JCP will further strengthen its ties with the general public and work even harder to realize people-oriented politics that represent the general interest, he said.
