Opposition party representatives to attend JCP Congress for the first time

December 20, 2016
Representatives of the three opposition parties and an Okinawa-elected Dietmember will attend the Japanese Communist Party 27th Congress slated for January 2017. JCP Secretariat Head Koike Akira announced this on December 19 at a press conference in the Diet building.

Koike noted that this is the first time for representatives of other political parties to attend a JCP congress as guests. “This is a historic and epoch-making event. We’ll welcome them with open arms,” he added.

The four guests are as follows; Azumi Jun (Deputy President of the Democratic Party), Mori Yuko (Upper House member of the Liberal Party), Yoshida Tadatomo (leader of the Social Democratic Party), and Itokazu Keiko (representative of the Okinawa Whirlwind, a political group in the Upper House).

Koike went on to stress that their participation shows that Japan has entered a new era where the alliance between the opposition parties and concerned citizens can actually move politics.

The JCP 27th Congress is scheduled to be held from January 15 to 18 in Atami City in Shizuoka Prefecture.
