JCP proposal for reform of Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly unanimously approved

February 23, 2017
The Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly on February 22 at its plenary meeting unanimously adopted bills to cut assembly members’ salary by 20%, abolish the daily “sitting” allowance, and tighten rules on the use of public funds for assemblypersons’ political activities, mostly in line with the Japanese Communist Party proposal.

The JCP Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly Members’ Group early this month released its proposal for assembly reform which included a 25% pay cut for assemblypersons. In addition, the JCP proposed that all political parties and groups in the assembly accept the reduction of the amount of political funds from the Tokyo government and publically disclose information about the use of the funds on the Internet. The JCP also demanded the elimination of a daily allowance for attendance at the assembly.

JCP assembly members’ group secretary general Oyama Tomoko issued a statement and welcomed the adoption of most of the JCP proposal as an important step to reform the metropolitan assembly.
