Shii comments on new UNSC sanctions against North Korea

September 13, 2017
The UN Security Council on September 12, Japan time, unanimously adopted new sanctions against North Korea in reaction to the country’s sixth nuclear test. The sanction resolution came out at an unprecedented speed after Pyongyang conducted the test on September 3, showing the cohesiveness of the international community.

The new sanctions set a ceiling on the volume of oil exports and ban all exports of natural gas and light crude condensate to North Korea.

The U.S.-led draft proposal for sanctions initially called for mandatory inspection of North Korea’s cargo ships on the high seas in addition to a total embargo of oil exports. The UNSC finally agreed to call on UN member states to inspect vessels in international waters with the consent of the flag state if the ships are suspected of carrying prohibited cargo.

Following the unanimous adoption of the new sanctions, Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo issued the following comment:

Our party demands that North Korea make a move to freeze its weapons and missile test programs by looking squarely at the unified resolve of the international community and abiding by the UNSC resolution. As the resolution seeks a peaceful settlement of the North Korean issue through dialogue, the JCP will also call on all parties concerned to sit at a negotiating table and restrain themselves in order not to start a war.
