JCP and CDPJ to jointly submit bill to put end to nuclear power generation

March 9, 2018
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on March 8 said to the press that the JCP and the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan agreed to jointly submit to the Diet a bill to create a Japan without nuclear power generation.

Shii noted that the party examined the details of the bill drafted by the CDPJ and found that the bill aims to stop operations of all online nuclear reactors and block reactivation of offline reactors without exception. He stressed that these two points correspond with the JCP position.

Shii also said, “This is the first agreement on the issue of nuclear power generation made by opposition parties, which is very significant. By setting the enactment of the zero-nuclear power bill as one of the pillars of our shared goals, we will promote joint struggles among opposition parties.” Shii expressed his determination to call on other opposition parties to become joint proposers of the bill.

Furthermore, Shii pointed out that the bill coincides with a proposal that the Federation of Promotion of Zero-Nuclear Power and Renewable Energy (Genjiren) made calling for legislation to do away with nuclear power plants. This indicates the possibility that efforts to enact the CDPJ-drafted bill will be joined by a wide range of citizens and organizations, including Genjiren, Shii added.
