Genkai NPP has accident after only 1 week following reactivation
|
The Genkai Nuclear Power Plant (Saga Prefecture) on March 31 stopped generating power due to an accident only one week after the reactivation of its No.3 reactor. The Japanese Communist Party Saga Prefectural Committee sent a written protest to the plant operator, demanding that the rector be put back offline.
On the previous day, workers at the plant spotted vapor escaping from the piping. The utility decided to stop producing electricity in order to find out what caused the leak.
The JCP written protest condemns the occurrence of the incident, saying that it was only last week that the operation of the No.3 reactor was resumed. It states that civil groups and the JCP have long been concerned that there will exist high risk of an accident occurring at the No.3 reactor, which was kept offline for seven straight years. The document urges the power company to thoroughly investigate the cause of the accident, publish investigation results, and permanently halt the use of the reactor.
