Koreans formerly charged as ‘Japanese war criminals’ call for restoration of their honor

Koreans who were charged as class-B/C Japanese war criminals after WWII along with their bereaved families on April 3 held a rally in the Diet building to demand government measures to restore their honor and compensate them for damages.

The rally was organized by a group formed in 1955 by former class-B/C war criminals who were forcibly mobilized to take part in the Japanese aggression under Japan’s colonial rule over the Korean Peninsula and their supporters’ group.

Lee Hakray, who heads the Koreans’ group, noted that many Koreans were executed as Japanese war criminals after the war. Touching on the resentment they must have felt, he expressed his determination to keep working to clear their names.

The daughter of a group member who died seven years earlier held her father’s picture and said, “Why do we have to wait so long before our modest request, the restoration of our family’s honor, is realized?”
