Governments reply to Gensuikyo’s ‘Letter from Nagasaki’

December 14, 2010
The Japan Council against A & H Bombs (Japan Gensuikyo) on December 13 announced that they received replies to the “Letter from Nagasaki to All Governments of the World” from 12 governments, including Switzerland, Montenegro, and Croatia.

The letter, entitled “We call for the Start of Negotiations for a Nuclear Weapons Convention”, was adopted by the 2010 World Conference against A and H Bombs in August.

Doris Leuthard, President of the Swiss Confederation, stated that outlawing all nuclear weapons is important and expressed her support for a Nuclear Weapons Convention which is one of five proposals by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

The Austrian government agreed with the view that “a nuclear weapons convention constitutes the primary means to effectively achieve complete nuclear disarmament.”

Japan Gensuikyo Vice Secretary Tsuchida Yayoi said, “Various countries’ responses to our letter exhibit the outcome of the efforts that Japanese peace activists made on many occasions, including at the 2010 NPT Review Conference and the 2010 World Conference. Encouraged by this, in solidarity with other countries, we want to further arouse a global citizenry to work to achieve the elimination of nuclear weapons.”
