Pressed by opposition parties, gov't adds an additional 2K child welfare experts
|
Pressured by opposition parties and public opinion, the national government on July 19 compiled urgent measures to increase the number of child welfare caseworkers by about 2,000 in order to prevent child abuse.
After the recent tragic death of a 5-year-old girl from abuse by her stepfather in Tokyo's Meguro Ward, the Japanese Communist Party and other opposition parties last month jointly submitted to the Diet a bill to revise the Child Welfare Act and the Child Abuse Prevention Act and demanded that the number of professional staff at child consultation centers be increased.
The Ministry of Welfare already has a plan to deploy a total of 5,430 child welfare specialists and child healthcare experts by the end of fiscal 2019. However, the number of child abuse cases as well as the number of people seeking advice keep going up, so the ministry has decided to add an additional 2,000 workers to reinforce the system of public child consultation offices.
