JCP Congress ends with unanimous adoption of 3 drafts

The Japanese Communist Party 28th Congress came to an end on January 18 with the unanimous adoption of three drafts on amendments to the Party Program and on two Congress resolutions as well as with the appointment of new members of the JCP Central Committee.

The new CC will consist of 193 CC members and 28 sub-members, and the CC Executive Committee will be composed of Chair Shii Kazuo, Secretariat Head Koike Akira, and Vice Chairs Yamashita Yoshiki, Ichida Tadayoshi, Ogata Yasuo, Kurabayashi Akiko, Tamura Tomoko, and Hamano Tadao.

The number of women executives has increased to 61 (27.6%) from the previous CC membership of 48 (22.4%). Eight women will assume standing executive posts which doubled the number from the previous setup. It was also announced that the CC will create a new committee on gender equality.

Chair Shii in his closing address said, "Upholding gender equality in its Program, the party has placed as many women executives as possible under the status quo," and stressed the need for the party to work hard to achieve a JCP advance to open the way for the formation of a coalition government of opposition parties. He ended his speech by again calling for more efforts to be made to make the party stronger and bigger.

The 28th Congress, as of January 18, received 175 letters or congratulatory messages from municipal heads, unions, organizations, and individuals. Also, messages from 13 overseas political parties or organizations, as of January 17, were sent to the Congress. The senders were as follows: the communist parties of Britain, Iraq, Greece, Chile, Vietnam, and Portugal; the Progressive Party of the Working People (AKEL), the Broad Front in Costa Rica, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) in Nicaragua, the Hungarian Workers' Party, the Citizenship Party in Brazil, the Workers' Party in Brazil, and the Workers' Party of Belgium.
