Ethnic minorities' group protests remark made by Education Minister

An ethnic minorities council in Hokkaido on July 15 sent a written protest to Education and Culture Minister Hagiuda Koichi who remarked that discrimination against indigenous Ainu people had stemmed from "differences in values".

Hagiuda on July 10, the eve of the opening day of an Ainu museum, started the controversial remark with "even if there had been the sad history", and went on to say, "I wonder if it's good to lump it into the category of 'discrimination' in terms of passing Ainu culture to future generations."

The written protest points out that Hagiuda is trying to avoid admitting to the history of discrimination toward Ainu by using the expression "even if there had been". It criticizes him for distracting himself from the inconvenient facts caused by the government's policy regarding the Ainu people.
