Tokyo Youth Union cerebrates 20th anniv. amid rise in its membership

December 15, 2020
The Tokyo Youth Union on December 13 celebrated the 20th anniversary of its founding amid an increase in the number of its members.

Harada Niki, the union chair, at their regular convention in Tokyo said, "Associated with the spread of COVID-19 infections, more and more workers who work in unstable employment are not only ordered to stand by at home but are losing their jobs." Harada stressed the need to confront the policies associated with neoliberalism which have been shown to be inadequate to effectively deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

Harada reported that the number of workers who came and sought advice increased after news coverage of the union winning compensation payments for workers due to coronavirus-caused loss of earnings. He added that especially in the food-service industry, collective talks have been increasing even for the whole workplace as well as for individual workers.

In discussion sessions, a union member who works for a major coffee chain said, "My shop is still closed, but I haven't received any leave allowance. As a result of collective negotiations, I got an option between working in another shop and receiving settlement money."

A union member working for sports-goods maker Asics said, "I am negotiating for reconciliation with the company over 'paternity' harassment, and I want to continue doing union activities to eliminate workplace harassment."

Watanabe Asami who was a submanager of Super Hotel said, "I was told I was commissioned to handle the hotel work, but actually I was just a live-in 'worker' with no discretion allowed. I was driven out of the place to live in the middle of the pandemic."
