Over 100K signatures submitted opposing adverse revisions of Immigration Law

April 23, 2021
An immigrants' rights advocacy group in Japan on April 22 submitted 106,792 signatures to the Ministry of Justice opposing adverse amendments to the Immigration Control Act.

Japanese Communist Party members of the Lower House Fujino Yasufumi and Motomura Nobuko along with lawmakers of the Constitutional Democratic Party and the "Okinawa Whirlwind" took part in the submission of the signatures.

Prior to the submission, JCP Fujino at a rally held in the Upper House members' office building pointed out that the law revision, if enacted, will significantly alter the purpose of Japan's assistance to refugees and immigration administration. He said, "I will make efforts to have the amendment bill scrapped."

A woman from Myanmar who has been in the process of applying for asylum said, "I will be arrested and possibly sentenced to death if I return home now. I'd like to live in Japan with my husband and children in safety. Please, approve my refugee application."
