Young people rally to oppose revision of Immigration Control Act that runs counter to refugee protection

May 1, 2021

More than 150 people, mainly young people, on April 30 held a rally near the Diet building to oppose a bill to revise the Immigration Control Act as it runs counter to the need for refugee protection.

This action was called for by an 18-year-old female junior high student living in Tokyo.

In the rally, explaining the reason why she decided to organize the rally, the student said, “Just recently, I learned that serious human rights violations occur at detention centers, and I thought I have to do something to change this situation.” She expressed her determination to work to help create a society where refugees will be treated with dignity, and said, “I’m absolutely opposed to the revision bill.”

University student Fukui Shu, a member of a youth group called “Voice Up Japan” working to realize an equal society, said, “We have to build a Japanese society where no one experiences human rights violations for any reason regardless of whether they hold valid visas.”
