The Kanagawa prefectural government and the Yokosuka City government, in regard to a drunk-driving accident caused by a 25-year-old petty officer third class assigned to the U.S. Yokosuka Naval Base, requested on June 30 that the U.S. military work to prevent the recurrence of such accidents.
According to the Yokosuka City government, the suspect at around 2 a.m. on May 16 drove in the wrong direction on an expressway in Yokohama City (Kanagawa Pref.) under the influence of alcohol and crashed into two trucks. He was arrested for drunk driving after the police detected an alcohol level exceeding the legal limit in his breath.
Reportedly, as a cannabis-liquid container was discovered in his car, the police is investigating the case on suspicion of violating the Cannabis Control Law.
The Yokosuka City government informed the U.S. Navy headquarters and the Minami Kanto Defense Bureau of the Defense Ministry that it was "regrettable" that the city learned about the accident from media coverage. The city government requested that the U.S. Navy take steps to prevent a recurrence, strengthen discipline, thoroughly educate its personnel about traffic safety, and promptly provide accurate information. The Kanagawa prefectural government made a similar request to the regional defense bureau.
