Shii comments on UN resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

A UN resolution denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a violation of the UN Charter was adopted with support from 141 countries, accounting for more than 70% of the 193 member states, at a rare emergency special session of the UN General Assembly held on March 2 at the UN Headquarters in NYC.
The resolution demands that Russia end its military operations in Ukraine and withdraw all troops from Ukraine immediately, completely and unconditionally.
Among the 193 countries, five countries (Russia, Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, and Syria) voted against, while 35 countries, including China and India, abstained.
Japanese Communist Party Chair Shii Kazuo on March 3 at a press conference in the Diet building said that taking the UN resolution seriously, the Putin administration should immediately cease its military actions and pull out of Ukraine.
Shii said, “The adoption of the resolution with overwhelming support in the UNGA is an epochal event. The resolution represents a condemnation against Putin’s actions by the international community.” Noting that the number of countries undertaking co-sponsorship of the resolution reached 96, Shii said that this indicates the international community’s unswerving opposition to Russia’s Ukraine offensive.
Shii introduced a press release published by the UN Secretariat following the passage of the resolution, and said, “This statement has a special significance as it shows the opinion of the world fully aware of the importance of the UN Charter.” The UN Secretariat press release states, “Some delegates representing small States decried that the ‘might makes right’ concept, which many agreed, must be replaced with the guiding principles of the Charter of the United Nations.”
Pointing out that over half of the 141 countries are components of the conference of the non-aligned countries, Shii said, “This materializes the JCP Program’s view on the 21st century world.” The JCP Program states that in today’s world, more than 100 countries which achieved political independence after the collapse of the colonial system in the 20th century play a role as an important driving force in achieving peace and social progress.
Shii stressed that the UN resolution highlights the importance of fostering collaboration of governments and civil societies throughout the world on the single issue of opposing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and pressing Russia to comply with the UN Charter. He said, “The JCP will continue working hard to help develop the collaborative global effort to lead the Putin administration to withdraw from Ukraine.”
